Theme Editions
Skill level: Beginner
The theme comes in three editions: Astro, Tina, and Sanity. The design, pages, and features are the same in all three, including the navigation, RTL, smooth scroll, and AI links. They differ in where your content lives and how you edit it.
Compare The Editions
| Astro | Tina | Sanity | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You edit in | Your code editor | A visual editor at /admin/ | Sanity Studio, in your browser |
| Content is stored in | Files in the project | The same files in the project | Your Sanity project, in Sanity’s cloud |
| Account needed to edit | None | None on your computer. Your own Tina Cloud project to edit online | Your own Sanity project |
| Click on the page to edit | No | Yes, under npm run dev on your computer. Online there are forms only | Yes, in the Studio’s preview on your computer. Online it needs a Node.js preview server |
| Live site | Static files | Static files | Static files |
| Good for | Developers and people happy to edit files | A non-coder editing, with content kept in Git | A team of editors working online |
Each edition builds a normal static site, and hosting it needs no account with us. You use your own Tina or Sanity account, and your content stays yours.
Which One Should I Choose?
- Astro if you are comfortable with text files or use an AI assistant to edit them.
- Tina if you want to click and edit, and to keep your content as plain files you can move anywhere.
- Sanity if several people edit from different places, and you want drafts, publishing, and an image service.
Getting An Edition
Each edition is its own zip, available from the theme’s product page, and its README.md explains its own setup. For the editing guides, see Tina and Sanity.
Moving Between Editions
- Astro and Tina both keep content in files, so your content can move between them. On some themes the two differ in file type or a few keys, so run
npm run tina:auditandnpm run astro-checkafter you copy. - Sanity stores content in the cloud. Content doesn’t move into or out of Sanity automatically, so choose before you write much content.
Most Of These Docs Apply To All Three
Pages in these docs often list Files: at the top, and the Customization pages show those files. In the Astro and Tina editions, those are the files you or the editor change. In the Sanity edition, most of that content is edited in the Studio instead. Your theme’s What Is Editable In Tina and What Is Editable In Sanity pages show where each thing is, and what has been tested for this theme.
